While Generations turned out to be a mobile game, the show’s makers are set on a resurgence for the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series — expanding the universe with characters from the past and future. Photo via Avatar News.
It was in December last year that we first got the news of a new slate of Avatar: The Last Airbender animated extravaganza — courtesy of the newly established Avatar Studios.
A new animated movie and show will be debuting every year starting 2025, reported the fan site Avatar News — with the first film to focus on the original “gaang,” but in their adulthood.
These offerings will have no connections to Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the original series. DiMartino and Konietzo previously quit the Netflix adaptation, citing creative differences.
The upcoming films will be getting a theatrical release, followed by joining the animated series at Paramount+ for the foreseeable future. Here’s a quick rundown of everything the studio has announced or is rumored to be developing in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe.
The studio is developing three animated films, reported Variety last year — with Avatar News later reporting that the three films would revolve around Avatar Kiyoshi (an Avatar before Aang), now Fire Lord Zuko, and Avatar Korra (following the events of The Legend of Korra).
While the films are expected to get a more updated look, the animation style will not divert much from the original series to capture the show’s unique character.
The upcoming Avatar movies will focus on an adult Avatar Aang (left, front) and Avatar Kiyoshi (right), the latter of which will serve as a prequel of sorts to the original series.

The first of the three new animated series (releasing in 2025) will be featuring the new Earth Avatar, reported Avatar News. The Earth Avatar will also be getting their own movie in 2027, reported the outlet.
While further details about the two other upcoming spinoffs remain under wraps, the studio has confirmed its long-term plans for “The Last Airbender” universe.
“Mike and Bryan are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series and probably multiple films,” told Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins to Deadline — confirming the development of multiple animated series.
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender series and its sequel, The Legend of Korra are currently streaming on Netflix, while the forthcoming animated films and shows will be released theatrically and on Paramount+.
